Introduction The Health & Safety Officer will be responsible for driving and maintaining occupational health and safety compliance across company operations, projects, and client sites. The incumbent will lead the implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of health and safety systems while ensuring compliance with all legislative requirements and industry standards.
The role requires a highly experienced and hands-on individual with strong exposure to mining environments and a sound understanding of construction and telecommunications operations. The incumbent must be able to work independently, engage with stakeholders at all levels, and operate effectively in high-risk and fast-paced environments.
Duties & Responsibilities Health & Safety Compliance
Ensure compliance with all applicable health and safety legislation, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Mine Health and Safety regulations, COIDA, and client-specific requirements. Implement, maintain, and monitor health and safety policies, procedures, and systems. Conduct regular audits and inspections to ensure legislative and operational compliance. Identify non-compliance areas and implement corrective and preventative actions.
Risk Management
Conduct site-specific risk assessments and hazard identification exercises. Develop mitigation strategies and implement controls to minimise workplace risks. Review and update safety files and project-specific HSE documentation.
Incident Investigation & Reporting
Lead investigations into incidents, accidents, near misses and unsafe acts. Compile detailed investigation reports and implement corrective action plans. Ensure statutory reporting requirements are completed accurately and timeously.
Safety Systems & Documentation
Prepare, maintain and manage project safety files and client safety documentation. Maintain accurate health and safety records, reports, inspections and audit findings. Ensure contractor and employee compliance documentation is current.
Training & Safety Awareness
Facilitate toolbox talks, induction programmes and health and safety training initiatives. Promote a proactive safety culture across all operational areas. Coach and guide employees and contractors on health and safety requirements.
Stakeholder Engagement
Liaise with internal departments, contractors, regulatory authorities and clients regarding HSE matters. Attend client meetings and provide professional HSE guidance where required.
Site Support
Provide on-site HSE support across mining, construction and telecommunications environments. Conduct regular travel to project sites nationally as required.
Desired Experience & Qualification Minimum Requirements
Qualifications
Grade 12 / Matric National Diploma or Degree in Occupational Health & Safety or related field SAMTRAC certification (Mandatory) Additional health and safety certifications advantageous SAIOSH registration advantageous SACPCMP registration advantageous
Experience
Minimum 5–8 years’ experience in a Health & Safety role Proven mining industry experience is essential Construction environment exposure advantageous Telecommunications industry experience advantageous Experience managing HSE compliance on projects and operational sites Experience drafting and managing project/site-specific HSE files Experience with audits, investigations and risk management
Knowledge Requirements
