Introduction My client in the mining industry is looking for a SHE Advisor to join their Safety team in Kathu, for a 12 month contract.
Reporting to the SHE Manager, the successful incumbent will support line management and employees through field-based coaching, training, inspections, incident investigations and reporting, contributing to sustained SHE performance and alignments with company standards.
Duties & Responsibilities Safety, Health and Environment
Safety
Implement, monitor and support compliance with approved safety policies, standards, procedures and codes of practice. Identify unsafe acts, conditions and systemic risks through inspections, observations and interaction; escalate unresolved or high-risk issues to line management. Actively participate in: Visible Felt Leadership (VFL) engagements Task-based and baseline risk assessments Critical control verification activities Support housekeeping standards and workplace organisation initiatives. Track, verify and close out corrective and preventive actions within agreed timeframes. Health Support implementation of occupational health programmes, including: Occupational hygiene exposures (noise, dust, heat, vibration where applicable) Wellness initiatives and medical surveillance awareness Promote employee awareness of occupational health risks and required controls. Support health-related campaigns such as Wellness Day and World AIDS Day, ensuring site participation and recordkeeping. Monitor and report health-related non-compliances and improvement opportunities to the responsible practitioner or manager. Environment Support compliance with approved environmental management plans and site-specific environmental procedures. Participate in environmental inspections, audits and incident identification. Assist with awareness and adherence to: Waste management practices Spill prevention and response controls Environmental housekeeping standards Escalate environmental risks and incidents in line with legislative and company reporting requirements.
SHE Advisory, Training and Awareness
Provide day-to-day SHE advisory support to supervisors, employees and contractors. Design, adapt and implement site-specific SHE awareness and communication interventions, including: Toolbox talks Safety campaigns Posters and learning material Co-ordinate and deliver approved SHE training and inductions, including: Project/site-specific induction VFL basics A1.2, A2, SLAM / SLAD (as required and authorised) Ensure SHE information from the company and site is: Interpreted correctly at operational level Communicated effectively Recorded and archived appropriately
Contractor SHE Management Support
Co-ordinate and support project-specific SHE inductions for:
Contractor Safety Officers Safety Representatives Site/Project Managers Monitor contractor adherence to SHE requirements during execution. Support corrective action management where contractor non-compliances are identified. Act as an interface between contractors and site SHE management for operational SHE matters.
Incident Management, Audits & Investigations
Participate in, facilitate or support incident and near-miss investigations in line with:
Legal requirements Company and site standards Assist with evidence gathering, root cause identification and corrective action development. Participate in internal and external SHE audits and inspections. Monitor implementation and closure of audit findings relevant to assigned areas.
SHE Reporting & Administration
Compile and submit accurate SHE reports using prescribed formats, including:
Daily (where required) Weekly Monthly Quarterly reports Maintain SHE records related to: Training and inductions Inspections and observations Incidents and actions Ensure documentation is complete, traceable and audit-ready.
Compliance
Apply and monitor compliance against:
company standards site requirements Applicable SHE legislation and regulations Identify gaps in compliance and recommend corrective actions to responsible managers or specialists. Stay operationally informed of changes in legislation impacting site activities. Support implementation of approved corrective or improvement actions.
Desired Experience & Qualification
National Diploma in Safety Management or equivalent (NQF 6) Bachelor’s Degree / BTech Safety Management or equivalent preferred (NQF 7) Valid driver’s license and own reliable vehicle 3-5 years in a safety environment, preferably in the mining industry, with at least two years in an advisory role. Expert knowledge of SAFETY technological systems and processes. Working knowledge of the Criminal Procedures Act, PSIRA Act and Mine Health and Safety Act. Basic knowledge of applicable business communication. Experience in Safety Project Management. Demonstrated experience managing specialised Safety functions such as alarm response, crowd/incident/riot management/aviation safety. Proficient report writing ability. Strong administrative capabilities. Advanced investigative proficiency. Expertise in discipline management. Proficiency in engaging stakeholders.
