Project Engineer (Civil Structural) - 12-Month Contract, Sandton

Introduction Our client, a leading engineering company, is seeking an experienced Project Engineer (Civil Structural) to join their team on a 12-month contract, with the possibility of extension, based in Sandton, Johannesburg.

In this role, you will be responsible for civil & structural project engineering, design, procurement, construction, site support and commissioning of projects both locally and abroad. The successful incumbent will also be responsible for the overall administration and technical direction of projects in the relevant discipline, within a multi discipline project environment throughout the full life cycle of a project and the execution of work within man-hour, cost budgets and time schedules.

Duties & Responsibilities Projects:

Performs and manages civil & structural engineering projects, which include but are not limited to, engineering calculations, design, and analysis, drawing review and strong technical presence during the fabrication and construction phase of a project. Contributes in the project planning and set up to ensure project execution is inclusive of the complete discipline scope of work. Advises on cost estimates for proposals and contracts in conjunction with the Engineering Managers or Project Managers. Prepares and is responsible for the necessary civil & structural engineering design and specification and ensures the design is communicated accurately for estimating and project execution. Management and distribution of drawings for the project and site activities as required. Gathers required information from other discipline engineers in order to carry out the civil & structural engineering required. Provides project teams with the relevant engineering input when required, including assistance with the interpretation of the design drawings and installation of the required equipment. Performs the relevant inspections and witness testing when required on components as required by the Quality Control Plan. Performs field supervision of the relevant construction and commissioning when required. Reports on progress in conjunction with the project team, and takes the necessary remedial action where necessary. Ensures project contracts, specifications, standards, lists and bills of quantity meet the project requirements and constantly keeps such documents updated throughout the project. Travels to construction sites to perform inspections to confirm the design is adhered to.

Cost Management and Budget Control:

Ensure cost control with respect to civil & structural design and subcontractor management. Actively investigate cost saving opportunities for the organisation.

Planning and Programming of the Project:

Liaise with the project planner to continuously monitor project schedules as well as re-planning to achieve new targets. Ensure sub-contractors and fabricators manage and maintain contractual timelines to minimise project delays and ensure successful projects.

Safety Management:

Ensure designs comply with the relevant legislations and legal requirements.

Project Risk Control:

Ensure formal record keeping and implementation of project decision lists. Ensure formal record keeping and implementation of lessons learned.

Desired Experience & Qualification Qualification and Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree in civil or structural engineering. Minimum 5 years’ experience in civil & structural engineering. Proven industry-related experience. Exposure to multidisciplinary project environments, including coordination with mechanical, electrical, and process teams. Structural analysis and design: Foundations, earthworks, drainage, and roads Structural steel and reinforced concrete systems Ability to review drawings and manage design-to-construction integration. Ability to manage deliverables, budgets, and schedules. Strong stakeholder and contractor coordination. Comfortable working across the full project lifecycle (concept to commissioning). Exposure to cost control, QA/QC, HSE, and contract management.

Knowledge Required:

Development of civil & structural specifications, data sheets, calculations, reports and design criteria, preferentially in the smelter, material / product handling and utilities / services environments. Development of civil and structural designs for earthworks, foundations, drainage, roads, structures in reinforced concrete, timber, and steelwork, building services. Proficient in limit states design. Ability to use Robot Structural Analysis, Prokon or Staad Pro to do structural analysis. Basic understanding of project scheduling. Strong technical drawing review skills, both 2D and 3D. Industry Codes and Standards for structural design in South Africa and abroad. Pricing, tendering and budgeting principles. Knowledge of Health and Safety rules and regulations (Occupational Health and Safety Act, and Mines Health and Safety Act).

Skills:

Multi-discipline interfacing in a project environment. Ability to understand impacts of design on construction activities and actively manage the design to assist and reduce construction costs and timelines. Fundamental understanding of 3D modelling and intelligent, model integration and collaboration, and how these are applied in the Building Information Modelling (BIM) process. Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc. Ability to interact with design teams remotely, via electronic communication platforms such MS Teams, Zoom, etc. Strong 3D and spatial awareness and visualisation abilities. Detailed analytical skills to measure, audit, investigate, solve problems, present ideas and negotiate. Ability to use time productively, maximise efficiency and meet challenging work goals. Analytical thinker with ability to examine issues from multiple viewpoints. An ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment. Accuracy and attention to detail with emphasis placed on quality. Able to work under minimal supervision. Exceptional people skills, punctuality and forward planning. Sound written and verbal communication skills for submission of management reports, planning and progress meetings. Must possess and maintain exceptional work ethic as well as uphold the company values.
