Introduction
We are seeking experienced Horizontal Directional Drillers (HDD) to support underground fibre installation and large‑scale telecoms infrastructure projects.
Duties & Responsibilities Successful candidates will be required to:
Operate Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) rigs safely and efficiently for fibre and utilities installations. Conduct pre‑site surveys, assess ground conditions, and determine suitable drilling methods and tooling. Perform pilot bores, reaming, pullbacks, and ensure drill paths meet design specifications. Set up, maintain, and troubleshoot HDD rigs, mud systems, locators, and tooling. Read and interpret site plans, utility drawings, fibre route designs, and adhere to project specifications. Carry out underground service detection and ensure safe working around existing utilities. Monitor drilling fluids, pressure, torque, and other operational parameters to prevent frac‑outs or equipment damage. Complete daily safety checks, toolbox talks, risk assessments, and ensure compliance with safety standards. Liaise with site supervisors, fibre teams, and civils crews to coordinate work and resolve onsite challenges. Maintain accurate records of drill logs, bore profiles, depths, tooling used, and job progress. Supervise or support ground crew during digging, rod handling, connections, and site setup. Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of rigs, tools, and support vehicles. Ensure worksites remain clean, organised, and compliant with environmental regulations.
Desired Experience & Qualification
Minimum 2 years’ HDD experience in fibre, utilities, or civils environments. Proven skills in borehole reaming, auger boring, drill rig operation, and HDD tooling. (Vermeer experience is an advantage.) Strong understanding of ground conditions, with the ability to adapt drilling methods, rig setup, and tooling to suit site variations. Experience with service locating, site surveys, layout planning, and safe work practices around underground utilities. Background across sectors such as fibre, water, gas, civils, or utilities. Ability to detail: Rig types operated Hole sizes bored Tooling used Certified or site-based competency Safety-focused, reliable, and adaptable, able to work well within fast‑paced infrastructure teams.
