Introduction Electrical Design Manager / Senior Electrical Engineer
Reports to: Head of Construction / Engineering Location: Head Office with regular site attendance Direct Reports: Electrical Design Engineers and Electrical CAD/BIM Technician Level: Senior Management | Full-time
Role Purpose
Lead and take technical ownership of the electrical design of multi-storey residential, commercial and mixed-use developments from concept through detailed design, approvals, construction, commissioning, handover and defects liability.
The role acts as the electrical design authority, personally producing, reviewing and signing designs, specifications and calculations, while directing site implementation and ensuring compliance with approved designs, statutory requirements, quality standards, budget and programme.
Duties & Responsibilities Key Responsibilities
Electrical Design & Engineering
Lead concept, schematic and detailed electrical design, including calculations, SLDs, layouts, risers, containment, schedules and specifications. Design HV/MV intake systems, substations, transformers, RMUs, protection and metering. Design LV distribution, switchboards, rising mains, busbars, final circuits and cable systems. Undertake load, diversity, voltage-drop, fault-level and discrimination calculations. Design standby power systems including generators, UPS, ATS and synchronisation. Design lighting, emergency lighting, small power, earthing, lightning and surge protection. Design residential metering and landlord/common-area supplies. Oversee fire detection/alarm, ELV, data, CCTV, access control, intercom, PA, TV and BMS infrastructure. Incorporate solar PV, hybrid systems, EV charging and energy-efficiency solutions where appropriate. Coordinate electrical services with architectural, structural and mechanical disciplines and undertake clash detection.
Approvals & Compliance
Manage statutory submissions and approvals with relevant utilities, regulatory bodies and authorities. Ensure designs comply with applicable local legislation, building codes and international electrical standards. Provide required professional certifications and sign-offs.
Procurement & Commercial
Prepare electrical specifications, BOQs, material take-offs and equipment schedules. Evaluate suppliers, manufacturers, shop drawings, technical submittals and samples. Manage technical requirements for long-lead electrical equipment. Define and technically manage electrical subcontractor scopes. Provide input into budgets, valuations, variations and value engineering.
Construction & Quality
Issue construction drawings and technical instructions. Provide technical support to site teams and resolve design/site queries. Develop inspection and test plans, method statements and quality checklists. Conduct site inspections and hold-point approvals. Witness testing and commissioning, including protection, insulation, continuity, earthing and integrated systems testing. Ensure completion of as-built drawings, O&M manuals, test certificates and handover documentation. Provide technical support during the defects liability period.
Leadership & Reporting
Manage and mentor electrical engineers, technicians and site personnel. Establish electrical design standards, drawing standards, specifications and approved equipment schedules. Own electrical design and procurement milestones. Report on design progress, approvals, procurement, cost, risks and site issues. Drive value engineering while maintaining safety, compliance and performance.
Desired Experience & Qualification Essential
BSc/BEng in Electrical or Electrical/Electronic Engineering. Professional engineering registration/chartered status, or eligibility and commitment to obtain local registration. Appropriate electrical wiring/design certification or licensing, where required. 12+ years' post-qualification electrical design experience. At least 8 years' experience designing multi-storey buildings, preferably 8+ storeys. Proven portfolio of residential, commercial and/or mixed-use developments where the candidate personally produced and signed the electrical design. At least two projects delivered end-to-end, from concept and detailed design through approvals, procurement, construction, commissioning and handover. Demonstrated experience in HV/MV supply, substations and utility coordination. Experience directing site supervisors and electrical subcontractors.
Technical
AutoCAD and Revit MEP. ETAP, Amtech/ProDesign or equivalent electrical design software. Working knowledge of BS 7671 / IEC 60364, IEC 61439, IEC 62305, BS 5839 and relevant local building/electrical regulations. Strong BIM coordination and clash-detection capability.
Advantageous
Experience in Ghana or West Africa and familiarity with local utility/regulatory processes. Developer-side or in-house electrical design experience. Experience with self-delivery/direct-labour construction models. Solar PV and green-building certification experience such as EDGE or LEED. MSc/MEng in Electrical Power Systems, Building Services Engineering or related discipline.
