Introduction An exciting opportunity exists for a highly motivated and innovative professional to join a dynamic team as Deputy Director: Earth Observations. The successful candidate will support the design, development and implementation of policies, programmes and initiatives that advance the use of Earth Observation data and applications in South Africa, while contributing to the implementation of the South African Earth Observation Strategy.
Duties & Responsibilities Key Responsibilities
Earth Observation Strategy Development and Implementation
Engage with user communities to identify and document Earth Observation user requirements. Facilitate stakeholder engagement and promote the benefits of Earth Observation technologies and applications. Support the review and enhancement of Earth Observation strategies and related policies. Coordinate the implementation of strategic initiatives through key stakeholders and partners. Monitor progress against strategic objectives and implementation milestones.
Earth Observation Applications and Innovation
Facilitate calls for proposals and coordinate proposal evaluation and selection processes. Promote the development of Earth Observation applications and data systems that address identified user needs. Monitor project implementation and evaluate progress through regular reporting. Coordinate the transfer and monitoring of project funding in accordance with approved agreements.
Strategic Support and Oversight
Provide technical inputs into strategic plans, annual performance plans and operational plans. Analyse and review quarterly, annual and project reports from entities and stakeholders. Support effective governance and performance monitoring within the Space Science and Technology portfolio.
Stakeholder and International Engagement
Engage with local, regional and international partners through bilateral and multilateral initiatives. Support collaboration and knowledge-sharing initiatives, particularly within the SADC region. Contribute to regional capacity-building efforts in Earth Observation and geospatial technologies. Promote the adoption and utilisation of Earth Observation information and services.
Human Capital Development and Awareness
Facilitate the development and implementation of Human Capital Development (HCD) initiatives. Support space science awareness and outreach programmes. Promote industry development, innovation and transformation within the Earth Observation sector. Encourage greater uptake of Earth Observation applications, products and services across sectors.
Desired Experience & Qualification Minimum Requirements
Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree (NQF Level 7) in:
Natural Sciences, or Engineering
Advantageous:
Honours Degree or Postgraduate Qualification in:
Remote Sensing Geospatial Sciences Related Earth Observation disciplines
Experience
Minimum of 3 years' relevant experience in Earth Observations or a related field.
Knowledge Requirements
Understanding of the Space Science and Technology landscape. Knowledge of South Africa's Earth Observation environment and key stakeholders. Understanding of the National System of Innovation. Knowledge of Earth Observation applications, remote sensing and geospatial technologies.
