Introduction Our client in Durban, a freight forwarding company is looking for a Bonded Clerk to assist with Customs Clearance; Bonded Cargo Control, SARS & Compliance, etc.
Duties & Responsibilities Key Responsibilities of Bonded Clerk
Customs Clearance
Prepare and process customs clearance entries for bonded cargo. (i.e. WE / XE / RIT / RIB / XRW / XIB) Capture and verify customs declarations accurately. Ensure all supporting documentation is available and correct before submission for all cross border, sea and air freight shipments. Check invoices, packing lists, transport documents, permits, certificates and other customs documentation. Verify tariff codes, customs values, quantities, weights and country of origin. Process amendments, acquittals and other customs-related transactions where required. Monitor customs entries from submission through to release and finalisation. Follow up on customs stops, queries, inspections and document requests.
Bonded Cargo Control
Monitor the movement of bonded cargo from origin to destination. Ensure bonded cargo is moved to the correct bonded facility or approved destination. Maintain accurate records of cargo entering and leaving bonded facilities. Track outstanding bonded entries and ensure they are acquitted within the prescribed periods. Investigate discrepancies relating to quantities, weights, packages, seals or documentation. Liaise with transporters regarding bonded cargo movements and delivery requirements. Ensure proof of delivery and relevant supporting documentation is obtained and filed.
SARS & Compliance
Ensure all customs declarations comply with applicable SARS Customs and Excise requirements. Maintain accurate customs records and supporting documentation. Assist with customs audits and provide documentation when requested. Identify and escalate potential customs compliance risks. Ensure discrepancies are reported and resolved promptly. Keep up to date with changes to customs procedures, tariffs and regulatory requirements.
Administration
Maintain electronic and physical customs files. Capture and update shipment information on internal systems. Maintain registers for bonded cargo, customs entries and outstanding documentation. Reconcile customs declarations against commercial and transport documentation. Provide regular status updates to management and clients. Follow up on outstanding documents, releases and acquittals. Maintain accurate filing and document control.
Communication & Coordination
The Bonded Clearance Clerk will regularly communicate with:
Clients and importers/exporters SARS Customs and Excise Transporters and drivers Bonded warehouses Freight forwarders Shipping lines / airlines where applicable Internal operations and finance teams Customs managers and supervisors
Desired Experience & Qualification
Grade 12 / Matric. Previous experience in customs clearing, freight forwarding or logistics. Experience with bonded cargo and customs procedures is a must. Knowledge of SARS Customs and Excise processes. Good understanding of customs documentation. Computer literate, particularly Microsoft Excel and Outlook and Easy Clear will be an advantage. Strong administrative and organisational skills. High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
