Introduction The Assistant Accountant (Fixed Term Contract) will support the Head of Finance in the day‑to‑day management of the organisation’s accounting and financial reporting functions. This role is suited to a detail‑oriented individual who has completed SAIPA Articles and has a solid grounding in accounting principles, compliance, and financial controls. The successful incumbent will play a key role in ensuring accurate financial records, timely reporting, and compliance.
Duties & Responsibilities Monthly Accounting & Reporting
Assist with monthly accounting processes to ensure completeness and accuracy of financial records. Prepare and post monthly journals, including accruals, prepayments, provisions, and adjustments. Perform regular balance sheet and income statement reconciliations, investigating and resolving variances. Assist with month‑end close processes and adherence to reporting deadlines.
Support the preparation of monthly management accounts, including schedules and supporting documentation.
Reconciliations
Prepare and maintain monthly bank reconciliations, ensuring all differences are appropriately resolved. Prepare supplier and customer account reconciliations, following up on outstanding or disputed items. Ensure proper allocation and aging of accounts payable and accounts receivable balances.
Financial Statements & Reporting
Assist in the preparation of annual financial statements in accordance with applicable accounting standards. Prepare accurate and timely financial reports for internal management and external stakeholders. Support ad hoc financial analysis and reporting as required by the Head of Finance.
Audit & Compliance
Prepare audit files, schedules, and supporting documentation for both internal and external audits. Respond to auditor queries efficiently and accurately, liaising with auditors where required. Assist in ensuring compliance with internal controls, policies, and procedures.
Tax & SARS Matters
Assist in handling SARS‑related matters, including responding to queries and requests for information. Support the preparation and review of VAT, PAYE, and other statutory reconciliations where applicable. Ensure that tax‑related documentation is properly maintained and readily available.
General Finance Support
Provide general accounting and administrative support to the finance function.
Assist with system reconciliations and data integrity checks.
Desired Experience & Qualification
BCom Accounting or other relevant Accounting qualification. Completed SAIPA Articles. Senior certificate. Valid code B driver’s license & own transport. Passed Combined Credit & Criminal Check as the incumbent would be in a position of trust handling cash & finances. S.A Citizen or valid work permit for S.A. Good communication skills, both written & verbal. Excellent ability to give attention to detail. Strong accounting & communication skills. Advance MS Excel (Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP’s etc.) & computer literacy skills. 3 years relevant articles experience. Experience with any Sage system will be advantageous.
